3You offer two types of containers for your Reverse Flow filters – metal and plastic. What is the difference?
Generally speaking, our metal corrosion-resistant baskets provide a higher flow rate because there is more open area in tow types of baskets for liquid to flow through. They also contain center cores that help produce a more even dispersion of the fluid that leads to a longer life. However, some customers prefer plastic baskets because they can be incinerated in an environmentally friendly manner.
4Where can I find Dynamic Filtration EDM filters?
Dynamic filters are sold through distributors in North America. Please use the “Contact Us” link at the top of our website and we will send you recommended distributors in your area.
5How does using a Dynamic Filtration filter help me provide overall value to my EDM operation?
  • Superior filtration qualities lead to less “dirt” in the dielectric fluid which leads to less stress on the mechanical parts in the EDM machine. In the longer run, this should lower maintenance costs and prolong the life of solenoids, valves, switches, roller bearings and sensing probes.
  • Optimization of the ionizing resin consumption leading to lower expensive resin costs.
  • Higher cutting speeds leading to shorter machine times. Poorly filtered liquid cuts down on cutting speeds. Poorly filtered liquid cuts down on cutting speeds.
  • Higher quality surface finish on the cut parts.
6How do different types of cutting materials effect the filter?
Different materials will affect the dialectic fluid’s cleanliness and filter life differently. For instance, tool steel generally produces larger particles that build up on the surface of the filter and lead to a longer filter life compared to non-ferrous materials like aluminum or copper that generates viscous hydroxide on the media and more quickly clogs the pores of the filter.
7How do I increase my EDM filter life?
There are several ways to basically increase the filter life. First, you might choose a filter with a higher micron rating than you currently use. This will generally result in a longer filter life and probably a cheaper up-front cost. However, in the long run, if you are running the same materials, there is a good possibility that you will be letting more particles into your machine which would lead to more frequent maintenance. EDM manufacturers suggest recommended micron rating for their machines.

Use filters with the optimum number of pleats or square footage of media in the filter. This guarantees the best ratio of filter paper to air space. This extended media surface area in the filter contains the EDM particles and provides the longer filter life. All Dynamic filters are designed to provide the longest possible life and meet the size requirements of each EDM machine.
8Are there additional ways to extend my filter life?
Yes, there is. Many EDM machine operators leave their EDM machines and filter pumps running all day long even when they’re not cutting. This uses unnecessary filter pump and chiller energy, and also shortens filter life. If the operator would turn off the filter pump and depressurize the system, some of the dirt that is caked on the filter elements will peel off and fall to the bottom of the housing. This will re-open sections of the pleats and provide a longer life for the filter.
9When do I change out a filter?
Most machines have pressure gauges that can be used to determine when to change out a filter. It’s recommended to replace the filter when the machines have hit its peak recommended pressure. Generally, this is at 3 bar or 43.5 psi. Allowing the pressure to build above its recommended replacement level can lead to blown filters or premature service for the pump.
10What micron rating should I use when I buy a filter?
We recommend always use the EDM machine recommended micron rating for the filter. A higher micron rating in the filter could lead to longer filter life, but it will also result in shorter resin life and probably more machine maintenance.

Material/Micron Recommendations*

Carbide - 0.35 to 1 micron
Carbon - 0.35 to 1 mircon
Graphite - 0.35 to 1 mircon
Tool steel - 3 to 5 micron
Gold - 1 to 5 micron
Stainless steel - 5 to 10 micron
Brass - 5 to 10 micron
Copper - 5 to 10 micron
Aluminim - 10 to 20 micron

*Micron level choice is a function of processes, material being cut and machinary step such as roughing or finishing.
11Is the correct size filter important?
  • Choosing the correct size filter is critical to achieving the proper flushing pressure. All Dynamic Filtration filters are designed to lower the EDM particles from being flushed back into the cutting zone.
  • Our Dynamic Filtration website has a very complete listing of which DF filters go on which EDM machines. We offer the widest array of filters in the industry. If you can’t find a filter for your EDM machine, please contact us and we will determine the correct filter for your machine.
  • 12What kind of EDM filters are available?
EDM filters come in a wide variety of sizes because different machines require different sizes. Generally, a machine uses either a Conventional filter or a Reverse Flow filter. On the conventional filter, the water or oil flows from the outside into the filter. In the case of Reverse Flow filters, it is exactly the opposite, fluids flow from the inside of the filter to the outside under internal pressure.
13How do you get optimum EDM filtration from an EDM machine?
  • Use the correct filter size for the EDM machine.
  • Clean dielectric fluid is essential, change when needed.
  • Keep a clean work tank.
  • Make sure the filter is not damaged before installing the EDM machine.
  • Follow scheduled maintenance and filter replacement intervals.
  • 14What are some of the most common causes of premature filter failure?
  • Continuous running of EDM machine can cause shorter life.
  • Machining of nonferrous metal will impact filter life.
  • Conductivity, old resin and machine condition.
  • Bacteria outbreak in water tanks.
  • Over running machine recommended pressure levels.
